On April 10, 2018, Honda announced that one million vehicles equipped with Honda Sensing had been sold in the United States. That is a lot of vehicles equipped with this suite of safety features<\/a> which, on most models includes Forward Collision Warnings, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, and Adaptive Cruise Control. But does Honda Sensing really help drivers avoid or minimize accidents?<\/p>\n

\"1<\/a>Does Honda Sensing really help drivers avoid or minimize accidents?<\/h2>\n

Honda Sensing cannot replace the attention and skill of a human driver, but it can help drivers stay more aware of challenging, and ever-changing, traffic conditions. A study done by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety looked at Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, and both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive Pilot vehicles from the 2016 model year, and evaluated more than 327,000 total insured vehicle years*. The vehicles in the study that did not have Honda Sensing worked as a control group to see how the features performed in real-world conditions.<\/p>\n

The study found that, while Honda Sensing couldn\u2019t prevent all impacts, it probably helped slow vehicles to make those accidents less damaging. The study found that collision claim severity was down, insurance claim frequencies dropped, and claims for injuries for those in other vehicles or on the road also decreased in vehicles that were equipped with Honda Sensing compared to those that did not have the technology.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next for Honda Sensing?<\/h3>\n

Currently, Honda Sensing is standard equipment on the 2018 Honda Accord, 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid, Fuel Cell, and Electric models of the 2018 Honda Clarity. The upcoming 2019 Honda Insight hybrid<\/a> will also come with this feature, and many other 2018 models have it as an available feature. The goal for Honda is to have Honda Sensing standard on all new Honda models by the 2022 model year.<\/p>\n
